The Blessing of Unity from Psalm 133

Psalm 133 is a beautiful and inspiring passage that highlights the importance of unity among God's people. It begins with the words, "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!" (Psalm 133:1, ESV). This verse reminds us that unity is not only a good thing to have, it is essential for the well-being and growth of the church.

In the following verses, the psalmist uses two powerful images to illustrate the beauty of unity. The first image is that of precious oil running down the beard of Aaron and onto his garments. This image refers to the anointing oil that was poured over the head of Aaron, the first high priest of Israel, as a symbol of his consecration to God (Exodus 29:7). The oil was a representation of the Holy Spirit's power and presence, and its application signified Aaron's authority to serve in his priestly role.

The second image is that of the dew of Hermon falling on the mountains of Zion. Mount Hermon was a majestic peak located on the border of Israel and Lebanon, and it was known for its abundant dew. The dew that fell on Mount Hermon was seen as a blessing from God, providing much-needed moisture to the dry and arid land below. In the same way, when God's people live in unity, His blessings flow down and nourish them like the refreshing dew.

As Christians, we are called to be unified in our love for God and for one another. Jesus himself prayed for the unity of his followers in John 17:20-23, saying, "I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me."

When we live in unity with one another, we demonstrate the love of Christ to the world around us. We show that we are his disciples, and we bring honor and glory to God's name. In contrast, when we are divided, we weaken our witness and hinder our effectiveness as a church.

Psalm 133 is a powerful reminder of the blessing of unity among God's people. As we strive to live in harmony with one another, let us remember the beautiful images of the anointing oil and the refreshing dew, and let us pray for the Holy Spirit to empower us to be instruments of peace and unity in the world today.
