Pastoral ministry in a small church
Close enough to know the people being served.
Living Way’s size allows pastoral ministry to remain personal. Questions do not have to pass through layers of organization, and care does not have to be scheduled weeks in advance simply because someone needs prayer, encouragement, or time to be heard.
The sermon matters deeply, but people are not interruptions to the ministry of the church. When someone genuinely needs care, the schedule can bend.
Preaching & teaching
God’s Word should be understood carefully and lived faithfully.
The aim is not merely to communicate religious information, but to help people understand what God has said and respond to it with faith and obedience.
Keep Christ at the center.
Biblical teaching should lead beyond information to the person and work of Jesus Christ and to the life God calls his people to live together.
Move toward faithful living.
The question is not only, “What does this text mean?” but also, “How should the truth of God’s Word shape the way we believe, endure, worship, love, and serve?”
Preparation for ministry
Training in service of the work.
Pastor Garey’s theological education includes study at Washington Bible College and Capital Bible Seminary. That training supports the work of interpreting Scripture carefully, thinking theologically, and teaching the church faithfully.
Training serves the work; it does not define it. The work itself is simpler: know God’s Word, care for people, pray, teach faithfully, and help believers become steadier followers of Christ.
What pastoral care looks like here
Word, prayer, presence, and honest conversation.
In a small congregation, shepherding is less about programs and more about knowing what is happening in people’s lives.
Prayer matters.
We want prayer to be a real response to need, not simply the item that opens and closes a gathering.
Questions are welcome.
You do not need to pretend you understand something that is unclear. Honest biblical and theological questions are welcome.
People need time.
Pastoral care is not always efficient. Sometimes faithfulness means listening, encouraging, praying, and allowing the schedule to wait.
